history

Our shrine, known as Kenbu Taisha or Kenbu Daimyojin, has been deeply revered as an important shrine of Omi Province and a major shrine listed in the Engishiki, an ancient Japanese record of shrines.

The deity enshrined here is the legendary Prince Yamato Takeru, who slew a bear at the age of 16, pacified the eastern barbarians, and passed away in Ise at the age of 32. His father, Emperor Temmu, established Kenbu in honor of his son's achievements, which became the origin of our shrine. During the reign of Emperor Jinmu, the shrine was relocated to Seta and worshipped as the foremost shrine of Omi Province.
Throughout history, it has been revered by imperial families and warriors. Particularly, Minamoto no Yoritomo, when captured by the Taira clan, prayed at our shrine for his future. He later realized his dream of restoring the Minamoto clan, returning to the shrine to pray again and donate many treasures and lands.

Since then, our shrine has been worshipped as a god of prosperity, protection from disasters, success in business, matchmaking, and medicine and sake brewing.
